Planting day at Penygaer Primary School, Llanelli

April 2008

Penygaer School’s new outside learning area recently received its finishing touches when Tree Appeal came to visit, bringing six extra trees and lots of help to plant them – including renowned naturalist David Bellamy and Principality mascot Dylan the Dragon!

Tree Appeal had already provided 600 trees to the school in Llanelli, all funded by Principality building society as part of their commitment to environment and education in Wales. The trees form the woodland area of the school’s open-air learning zone, complete with pond, outdoor classroom, play pipes and large musical instruments.

Headteacher David Tanner said, 'It was a fantastic day – the weather was kind to us and everyone said how much they enjoyed it. If it wasn’t for Principality’s sponsorship this wouldn’t have been possible and we thank them for making the day so enjoyable for all the children, giving out gifts and bringing along Dylan the Dragon.

‘The best thing is that the children now realise how especially important trees are for the environment. The trees will play a part in science, art and technology. They will bring wildlife, provide space for socialising and play, as well as quiet places, and shade for the summer.’
