Wave Utilities planting day at Crossgate Moor, BearparkPlanting day at Crossgate Moor, Bearpark, County Durham

February 2024

“We are here today next to the River Browney, hosting Wave Utilities for a tree planting session. We’ve planted 300 trees this morning with the 23 employees from Wave and we are going to be planting another 300 this afternoon.”
- Karen Stewart - Business and Development Team Leader, Wear Rivers Trust

Representatives of Wave Utilities visited Bearpark to help plant trees along the banks of the River Browney. As part of a project being run by Wear Rivers Trust the volunteers planted more than 600 broad leaf saplings giving a positive boost to the local environment.

“It’s really important to us that we give something back to our communities and the environment. We’re here today planting trees which will live for hundreds of years so we are literally doing something for our heritage and our future and giving something back to this planet… We’re having great fun, we’ve got a whole group of volunteers… It’s a great thing to be part of and I can’t recommend volunteering enough.”
- Jane Austin - HR Director, Wave Utilities

The trees were all native British species, grown in the UK and included Willow, Alder, Blackthorn and Birch. These new saplings will provide a perfect habitat for wildlife, promoting biodiversity and preserving the natural environment. The visitors gained hands-on experience of how trees are planted and learned how important trees are to the world in which we live.

“Wear Rivers Trust is an environmental charity that works right across the Wear catchment which basically covers all of County Durham. We love working with communities and partners to get river restoration off the ground. Tree planting, like we are doing today, is great because it creates habitat and wildlife corridors and also has a positive effect on the river.”
- Jack Butlin - Wear Rivers Trust

Wave Utilities have teamed up with Carbon Footprint as part of their carbon management programme and with Tree Appeal, sponsoring the planting of native broadleaf trees across the country to demonstrate their commitment to the environment and their aim of reducing their impact on the natural world.
