Planting at Dorothy Stringer School, Brighton

Brighton & Hove’s “Big Nature” is the name given to a loose association of different organisations which, as well as Tree Appeal, include: Brighton & Hove City Council, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Sussex Biodiversity Records Centre, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Sussex Branch of Butterfly Conservation and Dorothy Stringer Environmental Partnership, who have come together to deliver a series of biodiversity related events during 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). The aim is to involve and inspire people with their local wildlife and Big Nature as a synonym for biodiversity is a concept easy for children to understand.

David Bellamy went to Dorothy Stringer School to help Family Investments celebrate the first anniversary of their ethical Child Trust Fund (CTF) by planting over 1500 trees in the schools’ grounds.
 Speaking at the event, David Bellamy enthused: "It is great to see parents and children at the Dorothy Stringer School getting to grips with the new 4 R's, part of the curriculum in every day life. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Replant real ethical investments for all our futures. Family Investment's Ethical CTF is now part of the team providing valuable support to Tree Appeal and it is great to welcome them onboard."
Dorothy Stringer School is situated on the Surrenden Campus in Brighton. The campus is also home to several other educational establishments, including Dorothy Stringer Creche, Balfour Infants, Balfour Juniors, Varndean School, Varndean College and Downsview Special Link College all of which were able to send some representatives to the planting day. During one planting session the ages of the students ranged from 4 to 18.
Pupils at Dorothy Stringer High School have become biodiversity stakeholders on the Surrenden Campus because each individual will be planting a native broadleaf tree and 15 wildflowers. This equates to over 1500 trees (supplied by Family Investments) and 24,000 wildflowers (funded by the BBC Breathing places scheme, for an area of topographically altered chalk grassland slope, modified to change the temperature at ground level, to encourage the colonization of rare downland invertebrates).
